In todays world, there is still a lot of confusion revolving around the differences between hemp vs marijuana and cannabis. It’s one of those things that isn’t really taught and many people seem to let pass under their radar. Some people believe they are all the same, they are pro- marijuana so they are ok with it all without knowing the difference. The same people who may believe they are the same but are anti-marijuana may be against it all without knowing the difference.
I believe everyone should be educated on the difference between the three because they are all different and can provide a multitude of benefits when looking at the right facts!
Today we will go over the key differences between hemp vs marijuana and cannabis!
Hemp, Marijuana, and Cannabis Explained
Before we start let’s get one thing clear, hemp, marijuana and even cannabis are not the same thing!
Cannabis is a family of plants that contain two primary classifications, Indica and Sativa. Hemp is only part of the Sativa family and is only classified as hemp if it contains less than 0.3% of THC. Marijuana on the other hand can be part of either the Indica family or Sativa family.
As stated before hemp can only be classified as such if it contains less than 0.3% of THC whereas marijuana may contain from 10% all the way up to 45%, pretty crazy right? Marijuana growers are starting to grow plants with a much higher CBD to THC ratio for the medicinal benefits CBD has to offer but again is still not classified as hemp as it has a higher THC content than 0.3%!
Hemp vs Marijuana- Uses
There are many uses for marijuana and although some like to believe that it’s only for “stoners”, it does have the potential to help many people!
For the record, you can get CBD oil extracted from marijuana. Although since it contains higher amounts of THC, it may not be legal in your state. The uses for marijuana in this article are for both smoking and the oil.
On the medicinal end (the only end I’ll be talking about here), marijuana has been shown to help fight off anxiety, depression, PTSD, migraines, and much more. The reason marijuana is able to do this is not only because it contains CBD (non-psychoactive properties) but THC (psychoactive properties) which has been shown to have some of the same benefits in terms of fighting off and suppressing certain ailments or diseases (not all of them or close by far).
Some people just prefer marijuana because the “high” feeling they get is what helps to relieve there ailment or disease.
On the other hand, hemp has a multitude of benefits that don’t just stop at the buds on the plant.
Hemp, including the medicinal benefits you can get from the bud of the plant, also has benefits from the seeds and stock of the plant! The seeds from hemp and the stock of the plant can be used to make hemp oil (otherwise known as full spectrum hemp oil), the seeds and stock contain no CBD or THC but they do contain essential fatty acids as well as DHA which is crucial to the health of the brain. Hemp oil is a great supplement to be added for healthy heart, brain and bodily functions!
The stock of the hemp plant, because of its thick, strong fibers can be used for building materials, composites, plastics, paper, textiles and much more!
Hemp vs Marijuana- Aesthetic Differences
Besides having different uses, hemp and marijuana also look a lot different, being able to identify these distinctions will help you to understand the overall difference of the two plants.
The marijuana plant (most of the time) is going to have a shorter, more bushy appearance. The buds on the marijuana plant are also going to be a lot more dense in comparison to hemp.
Hemp on the other hand is going to be taller with the leaves being skinnier in comparison to marijuana. These skinny leaves will be concentrated towards the top of the plant. The plant itself will also look a lot less dense compared to marijuana.
Hemp vs Marijuana- The Overview
At the end of the day, the biggest factor on this topic is being able to educate yourself on it which I’m hoping my article today was able to provide. There are key distinctions between hemp vs marijuana that will allow you to not only tell them apart physically but also know the benefits each plant has to offer.
The two plants are very much different and when talked about need to be distinguished as to not bring up confusion! Always try to help educate others as well who seem confused on the topic!
